Assessment of Pacific Ecosystem-based Adaptation approaches under the Ridge to Reef theme, to reducing vulnerability and increasing resilience to climate change in the Tagabe River watershed near Port Vila. The Tagabe River watershed suffers from the removal of trees for firewood and topsoil disturbances from establishment of gardens along the riverbank that have contributed to degradation of the riverbank including through erosion and landslides.
Throughout 2021/22 our team were working with the Scaling up the Pacific Adaptation programme (SUPA). This work used satellite imagery analysis (NDVI) in the Tagabe Catchment near Port Vila to identify areas where vegetation cover has been reducing overtime, which can be targeted for on-ground catchment revegetation. This work was verified using field inspections alongside existing revegetation activities. We look forward to this programme being expanded throughout the catchment to support the Tagabe River management.
