Hong Kong Southern District Typhoon Assessment (RML)

A project to quantify storm surge damage to the Hong Kong Water World during extreme typhoons. A ‘design’ typhoon approach was used, based on analysis of historic tropical cyclone activity, central pressure deficit analysis and extreme value theory. Numerical modelling used Delft3D, which was calibrated against the Quarry Bay gauge during Typhoon Mangkhut (2018). Extreme storm surges were estimated at the site and combined with tide levels to estimate a design extreme water level.
